Getting What You Want – Men’s Summit 2024

Session 1 “Getting What You Want – Men’s Summit 2024” offers four key principles for achieving your desires. Each of these principles was led by Brother Earl Lynch, who trained us during the Men’s Summit 2024.

Partner Exercise Overview

At the beginning of the session, Brother Lynch asked us to find a partner, where one person was Partner A and the other Partner B. Each participant had either five or ten pounds in their hand. Partner A received specific instructions outside of the room while Partner B stayed inside, preparing to question Partner A on their return. The exercise covered four main principles, and the roles of Partner A and B alternated between each principle:

  1. Be Specific: Partner B was instructed to question Partner A, who had to communicate clearly on how to get the money back. If Partner B was specific enough, they would get their money back.
  2. Be Persistent: Partner A needed to demonstrate persistence while Partner B responded. If Partner A was persistent enough, they would get their money back.
  3. Use Variety: Partner B was instructed to question Partner A, who had to use different methods to convey their message. If Partner B used variety effectively, they would get their money back.
  4. Ask the Right Person: Partner A was tasked with ensuring they were asking the correct person for their money back. If Partner A asked the right person, they would get their money back.

This exercise was a practical demonstration of the principles and emphasized the importance of each one in achieving one’s desires.

Principles for Success

Here is a deep overview of each principle, enriched with scriptural references, examples, and an exploration of their spiritual and practical application, including quotes from reputable speakers like John Maxwell, Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, and Brian Tracy.

1. Be Specific

The first principle emphasizes the need to be clear about what you want. A specific request is far more likely to be answered, both in human relationships and in our relationship with God. Brother Earl Lynch trained us to be precise in our prayers and requests, reminding us that clarity brings results. Jesus himself teaches about the importance of specificity in our requests. In Matthew 7:7-8, Jesus says:

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8, KJV)

In this context, the principle suggests that we should know what we are asking for when approaching God in prayer. For example, if you desire financial provision, be clear about the amount or the need. An example of being specific can be found in the story of Hannah, who prayed specifically for a son (1 Samuel 1:11). She articulated her request to God clearly, and He responded by granting her desire.

Practical Example: Suppose you want to raise funds for a new church project. Instead of simply praying, “Lord, provide,” be specific: “Lord, we need £5,000 by the end of this month to build the community kitchen.” Specific prayers show intention and clear faith in God’s ability to provide.

Quotes:

  • “Clarity is power. The more clear you are about what you want, the more likely you are to achieve it.” – Tony Robbins
  • “A goal that is specific and clear becomes attainable and real.” – John Maxwell
  • “The reason why most people face failure is that they don’t know what they want.” – Jim Rohn
  • “When you are clear, what you want will show up in your life, and only to the extent you are clear.” – Janet Bray Attwood
  • “Goals that are not written down are just wishes.” – Brian Tracy
  • “The first step to getting what you want is to have the courage to get rid of what you don’t.” – Zig Ziglar
  • “Specificity builds credibility.” – Tony Robbins

2. Be Persistent

Persistence is crucial when seeking to achieve what you want. The presentation mentions that hearing the word “NO” does not mean you should give up. Persistence in prayer and actions is affirmed by Brother Earl Lynch, who taught us the value of continuous faith even in the face of challenges. Jesus emphasized persistence in the parable of the persistent widow. In Luke 18:1-8, Jesus tells of a widow who kept coming to a judge with her plea until she was heard:

“And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?” (Luke 18:7, KJV)

Jesus was emphasizing that persistence in seeking God eventually yields results. The widow’s relentless approach to the unjust judge signifies that even when obstacles seem insurmountable, persistent faith will move God’s hand in our favor.

Practical Example: Imagine you are applying for a ministry permit, and the government keeps delaying approval. This principle encourages you not to give up but to keep asking until the permission is granted, much like the persistent widow. Knock on those doors until they open!

Quotes:

  • “Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day.” – Jim Rohn
  • “Persistence guarantees that results are inevitable.” – Tony Robbins
  • “If you fall, fall on your back. If you can look up, you can get up.” – Les Brown
  • “The most essential factor is persistence—the determination never to allow your energy or enthusiasm to be dampened by the discouragement that must inevitably come.” – James Whitcomb Riley
  • “Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.” – Bill Bradley
  • “Patience, persistence, and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.” – Napoleon Hill
  • “Energy and persistence conquer all things.” – Benjamin Franklin

3. Use Variety

The principle of variety suggests not always asking in the exact same way. When a door remains closed, change the approach. Brother Earl Lynch guided us to consider multiple strategies, reminding us that God’s ways are beyond our understanding. Even Jesus used different ways to heal people. In one instance, He healed a blind man by touching his eyes (Matthew 9:29), while in another, He used mud mixed with saliva (John 9:6). This shows that even Jesus employed different methods to achieve similar outcomes.

Consider Proverbs 3:5-6:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6, KJV)

This passage speaks to the flexibility required in our faith journey. Leaning on God rather than our own understanding means sometimes varying our approach, trusting that God might work differently each time.

Practical Example: Suppose you are trying to grow your church attendance. Instead of always relying on social media promotions, consider inviting guest speakers, hosting community events, or engaging in door-to-door outreach. Variety often brings freshness and draws attention.

Quotes:

  • “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein
  • “There are multiple ways to achieve success. Don’t be afraid to explore new paths.” – Brian Tracy
  • “Flexibility is a virtue in a world that’s constantly changing.” – John Maxwell
  • “You can’t do today’s job with yesterday’s methods and be in business tomorrow.” – H. James Harrington
  • “Change before you have to.” – Jack Welch
  • “Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.” – Bruce Lee
  • “Do not be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try in different ways.” – Tony Robbins

4. Ask the Right Person

The principle of “asking the right person” highlights the importance of discerning who has the ability to fulfill your request. Brother Earl Lynch emphasized the significance of going to the right source—in human and spiritual matters alike. Not everyone is in a position to help you, and it is crucial to identify the decision-maker. James 4:2-3 warns about asking amiss:

“Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” (James 4:2-3, KJV)

The scripture emphasizes asking correctly—this could also mean asking the right person. In human affairs, it could mean presenting your request to someone who has the authority to act on it. Spiritually, it means ensuring we go to God with a pure heart and right motives.

Practical Example: If you are looking to implement a new policy in your church, it may not be effective to talk to volunteers who cannot make that decision. Instead, approach the church committee or senior leaders who are able to authorize such changes. Similarly, in our spiritual lives, when we have a need, we should go to God directly, the ultimate decision-maker.

Quotes:

  • “You must know who to ask if you want to get the answer.” – Tony Robbins
  • “Go to the source. The closer you are to the source, the more influence you will have.” – John Maxwell
  • “Effective communication is not just about speaking, but speaking to the right people.” – Brian Tracy
  • “It’s not about how much you ask, but whom you ask.” – Simon Sinek
  • “The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your questions and whom you ask.” – Tony Robbins
  • “Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.” – Anthony Robbins
  • “Asking the right questions takes as much skill as giving the right answers.” – Robert Half
